Transportation issues affect all of us on a daily basis and that is why I work hard to represent constituents across the Commonwealth as a member of the Transportation Committee in the Virginia General Assembly. I want to take the time to update you on several new projects the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has recently unveiled. Dozens of roadway maintenance and new construction projects are taking place all over the region, but Governor Bob McDonnell just announced two exceptional improvements to transportation quality in Hampton Roads.
“The ‘Reach the Beach’ initiative will help VDOT improve the overall traveler experience by providing updated travel times at key decision points approaching and leaving the beach,” said McDonnell. “This system will help travelers by providing them with the most reliable travel time information available and where possible, encourage them to use alternate routes that are less congested.” Starting today, Wednesday, May 23, six new electronic message signs will be unveiled in Hampton roads providing real-time traffic information and allowing motorists to choose the best and quickest route to the Virginia Beach Oceanfront or the North Carolina Outer Banks. Governor McDonnell also announced today that an overhauled 511 Virginia Traffic Information System is now available to motorists and includes improved features such as a mobile app, improved website and enhanced voice recognition software. “Virginia is a leader among state departments of transportation in providing real-time traffic information and live streaming traffic images to help motorists make the best travel choices,” said Governor McDonnell. “The new and improved 511 system empowers drivers with the knowledge they need to avoid congestion and take a faster route to their destination.” More on this vital improvement can be found HERE.
I hope you find this transportation update informative and reflective of VDOT’s latest initiatives in Hampton Roads. It is a pleasure to work alongside the Governor in conjunction with VDOT to promote the best transportation system possible across the Commonwealth.
